Het verhaal is te mooi om hier niet in geuren en kleuren te doen. Dat de WHO al enige tijd aan prestige inboet leek vergezeld te gaan van de fouten die tijdens de Corona-crisis worden gemaakt. Maar dat de WHO ook zelfstandig in staat is tot de meest abjecte blunders is altijd leuk om te weten. Evenals voetnoten over de betrouwbaarheid van de organisatie.
Ons verhaal begint bij de ernstige toename van Corona-gevallen in Afrika. Dat maakt de Afrikaanse leiders ongerust, en hun vertrouwen in de WHO is door de recente publiciteit ook in Tanzania.ernstig aangetast. Zodat het vervolg dat u hier leest afkomstig lijkt uit een soort sprookje. De Tanzaniaanse president John Magufuli besloot namelijk te testen hoe zuiver op de graat de WHO wel niet is.

Zo gezegd, zo gedaan. Tanzania stuurde de WHO drie bloedmonsters, met de vraag of degenen van wie ze afkomstig waren leden aan het Corona-virus.
Wat de Tanzanianen ‘vergaten’ te vermelden was dat de monsters afkomstig waren van een geit, een papaya en een kwartel. Het antwoord kwam snel, maar was ietwat verbijsterend:
All three samples reportedly tested positive. When the president heard the news, he reportedly confronted the WHO, then kicked the organization out of the country. Though, to be sure, the WHO has yet to comment on the situation.
Mijn eerste vermoeden was dat de WHO zich bedient van gratis tests uit China, mogelijk via een Turkse tussenpersoon. Het soort idioten dat dáár in trapt is wijder verbreid dan je zou vermoeden. Of:
That would suggest one of two conclusions: either the strain of SARS-CoV-2 running amok in Tanzania is much, much more infectious than scientists understand, or the WHO has been reporting incorrect results either on purpose (as an attempt to bolster its credibility in the face of President Trump’s attacks) or via error (yet another indication that the WHO truly is “badly brokem”.
Terzijde:
President Magufuli has garnered plenty of controversy himself over the past few weeks. He recently requested stockpiles of an ‘herbal tea’ that has been falsely branded as a COVID-19-cure, and has launched investigations impacting domestic labs and even frontline medical workers as he’s claimed the number of positive tests in his country is too high.
Hoe dan ook: papaya’s uit Tanzania zult u mij dit jaar niet meer zien eten. En of ze er bananen hebben wil ik niet eens weten.
